May Peace Prevail on Earth

Here are some photos I’ve taken during my time in Tokyo so far. I’ve been posting new stuff more or less daily to Instagram. Somehow I’m already about halfway through my stay.

Somehow these images both capture and don’t even come close to capturing my experience here. That kinda place, I guess.

Some great photos here, Jason! I love the tobacco place and the stacks of beer crates.

Any chance you can share with us what camera was used? Some of these photos are absolutely gorgeous.

Just my iPhone 17 Pro. I use the tools in the iOS Photos app to color correct, etc. Nothing fancy.

Thirding the comments on your photojournalism skills.  Very nice photos, and not the usual touristy stuff I usually see from Japan (which I have yet to visit)

If you don't already, be sure to follow https://www.instagram.com/tokio_kid/ on Instagram. Great photos from Japan. Used one of them as the background image for my book cover.

Man I love Tokyo. Great photos, thanks for sharing with us Instagram-quitters!

Love the big round tree...

Love the trees. How did you manage to get that shot with all benches empty?

Jason Kottke replying to Kevin McCoy

That shot is from Shinjuku Gyoen. The forecast was for rain that day (it rained like 35 days in a row in Tokyo, a new record) and the park charges an admission fee, both of which kept the crowds away. Got lucky, in other words.

Terrific images!

Lovely, Jason! I hope you're having an excellent time!

Lovely! But then — Japan is very photogenic. I am currently in Okayama and will be in Tokyo in two weeks time. Hopefully it won’t rain…

Japan is amazing and these photos capture it.

Love Japan. There are certain images of a seeming isolated thing that can capture a place so well... and for some reason this is especially true in Japan. Jeffrey Friedl has done a great job of this: https://regex.info/blog/photostream/japan.html#random

Yeah wow, these are great.

Wonderful photos of my favorite metropolis, Tokyo. By a wonderful turn of cosmic events, my favorite blogger is in Tokyo. Jason Kottke: In an earlier post, you wrote, “Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Station.” These three locations form the axis of how I perceive and ride the trains in and out of Tokyo from where I’m at, just across the Maruko Bridge, in Musashi Kosugi. These three locations are always on any list that I make for someone visiting. By this point in your stay, you must be familiar with the forms of the kanjis 新宿, 渋谷 and 東京駅. I really like the photo in Shinjuku Gyoen. I look forward to more photos from your stay, new places for us old timers to visit!

These are beautiful. I get what you mean by photos not doing the real thing justice. Nothing beats being there!

Y'know, maybe it was only stuff like 'bokeh' but I'd posit that 'golden hour' was a concept invented here. The sun coming up relatively early and going down too early was a bummer I noticed when moving from the east coast where summer nights can feel eternal, autumn and spring can be equally crappy and wet so both congrats and good on 'ya for making the most of it 🥰
