I got a new credit card and all my subs broke and though I didn't think I had a lot of newletter subs, it turned out it did. But now I don't, and it's fine. It used to be you could pay for a subscription to Travel & Leisure, and it was like $16 a year. You got a lot of voices about a lot of different places. Yes there was gatekeeping, marginalized voices weren't represented, etc. I will never argue against the web giving people a platform to publish. It's still amazing. But now you have to pay $8+/m per voice. And that's less so.
Yes. And (to be clear, this is not addressed towards this website) those publications had the benefit of editors.
How to reinvent magazines?
All of this. As much as I love so many writers and applaud their success, I can't justify paying $1,000/month in subscriptions to newsletters. And even if I could, it's hard to justify the ROI for many if not most. And as someone that used to get paid decently to write about music and film, it's hard to build something from scratch (I'm trying!) and freelance pay is worse than ever.
