The coolest thing about Defector IMO -- Ley kind of elided it and it needs to be mentioned all the time -- is that it's worker-owned (like 404 Media).
Credit to them for that and for succeeding (again, likewise 404).
Not implying worker-owned is a universal solution, the best way to go in all situations, but for providing quality journalism, probably. (I'm also thinking back in ancient times of IF Stone's Weekly.)
Additional coolness is that they work quite hard to support other worker-owned journalism sites and continue to pave the way for better support services for such organizations.
Yeah, I really appreciate the solidarity of the various worker-owned sites like Defector, 404, etc.
I'm not a sports guy, but I love the mission and non-sports writing at Defector. Besides 404, where else can I throw my money at that kind of excellent writing?
