If you're on iOS:
Settings->Keyboard->Text Replacement
Add a shortcut!
Now whenever I type "shrug" I get ¯\(◉‿◉)/¯
(Also useful for words/names that the phone just refuses to learn)
I love this
Yep I’ve got mine as “sshrug” to differentiate the times I really do want to type the word “shrug.” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I also have ಠ_ಠ saved as “llod” (short for “look of disapproval” and following the repeated-first-letter scheme.
Ok I finally understand now! I did this and feel very pleased! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ಠ_ಠ (but not actually) ಠ_ಠ
Thank you!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I am looking forward to seeing all of these emoticons in our Slack in the coming days
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've been copying it from emojipedia which is a bit fiddly, so I'm bookmarking the crap out of this baby.
On iOS, at least with gboard (the google keyboard for iOS), typing 'shrug' offers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ as an auto replace.
Came here to +1 iOS autocorrect. Been swapping in ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ for ten years now that way.
Ok good to know 🤷♀️ I just have this person when I type “shrug,” but maybe I need to fiddle around
Oh wait, I see what you’re saying — I think that’s not the keyboard I use ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have mine set to "& shrug" (minus the space or it autofills. Use the ampersand for all of them, including (^-^)_日 (beer), (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ (flip), and ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ) (place).
The table flip emoticon is just the best. Especially if you use it with upside-down unicode letters (╯°□°)╯︵ ɯsıɔsɐɟ
i've never seen (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ before but it's definitely going to challenge ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ as my all-time fave tyyyy
Just chiming in to say I've had this shortcut set up for years, and it is always the first thing I do when I get a new iphone or work computer. I use "idk" as the phrase that triggers it :)
Thank you! I have had to google it every time.
Thank goodness we’re this deep in the comments thread before That Pedant (i.e. myself) wades in to point out omgpeopleyoudrivingmecrazy it’s caomoji, cao == Japanese for face, e == Japanese for picture, this is the technically the former, and, Futurama reference, technically is the best kind of correct amirite
Fun fact, on the iOS/iPad 日本語ローマ字 keyboard, the key (after selecting “.?123”) that all of the default caomoji are stored/hidden behind is marked with a “^_^”
(To be clear I long ago gave up on the common pedant battle grounds like the definition of ‘literally’, communication is about being understood, not being perfect, etc.) (I make fun of myself using it everytime by intentionally writing it rong, by saying ‘literarily’)
On a related point, how silly am I that I recall Slack trying to make ‘reacji’ a thing, did they finally give up on that? Ye olde ‘stop trying to make fetch happen’ Clueless/Jan meme?

This is the name that'll be displayed next to comments you make on kottke.org; your email will not be displayed publicly. I'd encourage you to use your real name (or at least your first name and last initial) but you can also pick something that you go by when you participate in communities online. Choose something durable and reasonably unique (not "Me" or "anon"). Please don't change this often. No impersonation..
Note: I'm letting folks change their display names because the membership service that kottke.org uses collects full names and I thought some people might not want their names displayed publicly here. If it gets abused, I might disable this feature.
