Hello, Everyone, Let’s Have A Week
I am excited to be back editing Kottke.org this week for the first time in one thousand years, and I am also scared because what if I don’t remember how to write on the internet? Everything has changed from how it used to be and also has it really? As long as they still make skateboarding videos, we’ll be OK I’m sure.
As Jason mentioned, I own an ice cream shop called Gracie’s and an ice cream shop that is also a bar called Earnest Drinks, and you should come to them. A few years ago, I put out a kids’ book called Salty Avocado with Chris, I’m hoping to put out another kids’ book this year, and like Jason said, I’m almost done with a novel I hope you get to read sometime.
This week we’re gonna have some videos of people doing stuff and also other internet about food and animals, we’re gonna say mean things about Intuit, we’re gonna quote Eli Cash, and maybe we’ll do something about ice cream if y’all want to because it’s something about which I know a good amount. If you see any typos, no you didn’t. The last time I edited for a week, there were lots of websites still, and now it feels like there are hardly any, so if you see any good links, please send them over on Blue Sky.

Welcome back!
I mean feel free to turn the site into an ice cream blog. What’s he going to do, fire you?
The newsletter for his actual ice cream store is barely an ice cream newsletter, so I think we're going to be ok.
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream…blogging
Your intro has really made me chuckle, welcome back!
Since my favorite job ever was being an ICM (ice cream maker) at Herrell's in Harvard Square, I fully support a week of ICB (ice cream blogging). Let's talk base: at Gracie's is it purchased or made in-house? Best seasonal flavors? We did a pumpkin in the fall at Herrell's -- before the Great Pumpkinification of Everything -- that I still dream about. Can we discuss why Americans like such shitty ice cream full of air and fillers? Worse, why do they like frozen yogurt? Like that horrible 16 Handles place? Also: soft-serve (looking at you Vermont creemees) is inferior and hard-serve is the only way! Delivery methods: cone or cup? Fancy fresh waffle or sugar or cake cone? And favorite widely-available store brands? What about best local ice cream spots worth a visit/detour? Let's go!!
Also this is a nice tribute to Herrell's I came across trying to find out when Herrell's HS closed.
The shop Steve owned before Herrell's is considered the genesis of gourmet ice cream in the United States! (We make a pumpkin, when I remember, but it doesn't sell after Halloween.)
Cup, usually, though sometimes a waffle cone in the summer.
Oh yeah I know all the history, we used to have to explain it at Herrell's to customers. Also we called "mix-ins" "smush-ins" or "mash-ins" or something, because when Steve sold the original Steve's he also sold "mix-ins", so we had to explain that when people tried to order a mix-in. But I got out of the customer-facing ice cream positions as quickly as possible because I couldn't take the people asking for the non-fat frozen yogurt ("is that the non-fat?! are you sure?!?!") that they wanted topped with hot fudge and whipped cream.
I didn't realize he coined "mix-ins" because that's what I've always called them because it's a better name than inclusions. (A pet conspiracy theory I have is YUM Brands killed the rollout of Steve's/D'Angelo stores because they were selling more Pepsi at their other combos.)
We don't have soft serve yogurt or ice cream because I spent two summers cleaning soft serve machines for 45 minutes a night when I was 17 and do not want to tangle with those machines anymore.
I was on vacation and missed the site for a bit, so I just saw this.
I own an ice cream shop too, and love all of Meg's questions. You should go all ice cream for a themed day of posting.
I don't know why I didn't think of this! I was just going to do a single post, but now I've got some work to do.
Also, where's your shop!
North of Orlando. We're mostly a marshmallow company with a small retail space at Disney Springs. We do some QVC, online sales, wholesale, etc. Our main location is down the street from my house, and I LOVE ice cream, so we make our own ice cream and the primary focus of that location is ice cream. No churn base, which is crazy and a hassle, but I love doing things the hard way!
Dang, sounds cool.

This is the name that'll be displayed next to comments you make on kottke.org; your email will not be displayed publicly. I'd encourage you to use your real name (or at least your first name and last initial) but you can also pick something that you go by when you participate in communities online. Choose something durable and reasonably unique (not "Me" or "anon"). Please don't change this often. No impersonation..
Note: I'm letting folks change their display names because the membership service that kottke.org uses collects full names and I thought some people might not want their names displayed publicly here. If it gets abused, I might disable this feature.
If you feel like this comment goes against the grain of the community guidelines or is otherwise inappropriate, please let me know and I will take a look at it.
