Motion Extraction

In this video from his YouTube channel “about anything”, Posy demonstrates a video filtering technique called motion extraction. A commenter calls this video “a tutorial, a demonstration, and a work of art”, all rolled into one. It’s really lovely and informative. My jaw actually dropped at the “how can you tell which stones were disturbed on the path” part.

Reminds me of the (commercial, closed, but nifty) industrial motion amplification tools from RDI Technologies (www.rditechnologies.com) I first saw it on Steve Mould's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEoc0YoALt0

RDI has great examples online. Of course, Posy's video is a different approach, and far more accessible to regular folks & artists.

Would love to learn more about the tools doing this kind of thing (particularly techniques & free/open-source software).
