Star Wars and the Return of the Jedi: same plot?

I wonder how George Lucas got away with having the same plot for both Star Wars and the Return of the Jedi. There’s a Death Star that’s threatening the entire galaxy. The rebels send in some small ships to target a weak point, blow it up, and save the galaxy from the dreaded Empire. They do the same thing twice. Why haven’t I heard anyone complain about this before?
