I listened to the TAM interview where NHJ listed all of the reasons that she had wanted her daughter to attend a non-selective school. She described, as I recall, the racial makeup student body and teachers, the closeness of the school, the fact that it was NOT selective, and some other things. One thing that she did not mention was education.
I am glad that her daughter asserted herself so she could attend a school that emphasized education and even more glad that she was able to work hard with tutors to get up to functioning on her grade level.
In all the Discourse around this, one piece has really stuck with me — a kid (now woman) who did get “out” to a “good” school who reflects on what that did and didn’t offer in comparison to what came before, and what we mean when we frame a school as “good”
This parent perspective is also insanely nuanced and wonderful
