I don’t know what I’m more excited for: this movie, or Fielder’s Oscar Campaign for Best Documentary.

I clicked on this trailer this yesterday without any context except recognizing Nathan Fielder, and thought it was a comedy. Then I saw it had a “documentary” tag and thought it must be a mockumentary about something. I’m flabbergasted that it’s real and she’s real. Her behavior, as portrayed in this scene, is comic book innocence/sincerity. How utterly wild that this is real!
I keep coming back to read comments, and this one especially made me chuckle. I've watched the thing five times now. "Good chat." SO WEIRD!!!
@Dunstan Most of Nathan Fielder's work (Nathan for You, The Rehearsal) blurs the line between documentary, comedy and performance art. In that sense, this looks right up his alley. That said, it also looks completely bonkers. I'm in!
It cuts right before she stabs that guy in the eye. She is kookoo for cocopuffs.
Someone with two cents of psychology expertise can evaluate this better than me, but it seems like she's simultaneously (a) a deep-seated sociopath (b) so far down the spectrum that she has no idea how to act normal.
This is beyond creepy. But also, I think the same thing every time I see an interview with Zuckerberg. Gender disparity even here.
If that's what "radical transparency" translates to, count me out (of the RT movement, not watching this masterpiece of cringe documentary...)
It just goes to show you how far a group of people - the general public, political party members, cult members, shareholders - can be lead by a sociopath, just because they're promised the world and blindly put their faith in that person.

yeah, incredible experience to be captivated by a single close-up, instead of 50 cuts lasting a fraction of a second each, condensing the plot of a film into a minute. regret not seeing this in a theater for the first time.
We all know she's a liar. But we also know that Nathan Fielding is a liar (of sorts). How much of this teaser is a lie? None of it? Some of it? All of it? Is her face deepfaked? Is her voice AI-simulated? That over-the-shoulder shot on Nathan could have a stand-in for Holmes. The wide shot at the end could also feature a deepfake of her face.
Perhaps I'm getting carried away in my doubt of everything these days.
Or perhaps not.

F is for Fake is one of my all time favorite documentaries. I might watch this odd documentary about a sociopathic scammer. But I'll definitely watch F is for Fake again, and again, and again.
I'm intrigued by Fielder's approach and fascinated by the whole Theranos story, though, admittedly, I've not seen much of the other media about Elizabeth Holmes and her company.
Aside from her personality, mental state, or ambition, I'm mostly disturbed by the avarice of those who invested in a technology that was suspect from the beginning. I would love to know their motivations. I wish we could get an honest account, from her, of how it felt to know that she hooked these people with a lie.
I believe "$$$" will suffice as my answer.
I don't think people invest in a technology because they think it will work and be profitable. I don't think they invest in a technology at all: rather they invest in a company because they think that its valuation will go up and that they are smart enough to pull their investment out before the absurd claims are revealed to be absurd and the valuation collapses.
There are some very well-publicised instances of this happening currently.
I think Tim nailed it - this kind of postmodern investing isn't ignorant of the pyramid scheme, it's just hoping the bottom doesn't drop out, or that their investment is out before it does. For everyone who still has money in at consequences-time, they have to do this make believe act, "oh, I was so swept up by their personality, I didn't know enough about the industry/technology," yada yada.
I find the discourse around the trailer interesting. I get the impression that many people see in the trailer confirmation of the prevailing public perception about Holmes. I'm not saying that she isn't at fault for misleading people nor that she may not be some sort of sociopath. Fielder's world-building is so uncanny though. I do feel that the trailer is strangely humanizing, looking past her imploring stare. I think the trailer gets at the intimacy of his access really well. How close is enough to access the reality of someone so heavily mediatized like Holmes? Fielder is practically leaning in for a kiss in trying to answer this.

Wow! This is intriguing, but yet so disturbing. I am curiously drawn to the idea of wanting to watch this film - and also mortified by the idea and want to avoid it. What a great conundrum!
