Anil Dash built a standalone Touch ID sensor to use with your Mac if you don’t have a newer Apple keyboard. It’s open-source…the code and instructions are on Github.

Enjoy his writing a lot. Neat to see him stretching into some new and rusty physical skills.
My solution was to 3D print a keyboard backpack for my iMac such that the thumb sensor sticks out from the side of the computer. If I were to do it again, I'd do it sideways so that the volume/brightness buttons also peek out.
