Even if you aren't surfing, it's a remarkable place to visit. The drive from Anchorage to points south is one of the best in the US.
My brother-in-law and his wife live on the Kenai peninsula; if you drive from Anchorage you go up one side of this. We did see people surfing it when we did the drive. Note: it's much faster, but almost as scenic, to take a 'puddle jumper', a small plane (Ottter?) where they have to weigh you and your luggage before boarding, back to Anchorage from the Kenai airport.
