Man I felt this essay. Not so much because I was ever much of a torrent guy. But the sense of discovery and meaning from music he describes is so much harder to attain now, even though music is more accessible than ever. Not streaming helps. Almost all my listening is music I listen to I own in one form or another. But the communities that used to exist now all seem to be walled gardens: Substack, Discord. Or the Wild West (Reddit). None of it really designed for connection. Even though that was what music used to be about. I don’t know. If anybody has the secret handshake for the private clubhouse where the middle aged music fanatics congregate…
