Only heard three, myself: King Sunny Ade, Mulatu Astatke, and The Comet is Coming. Time to get listening.
When I was in college, I took a promo CD from either the Tufts or Skidmore radio stations and I loved the first two songs. Right after college, my apartment burned down and I lost all my CDs and then couldn't find the album anywhere. After 10+ years I started looking for the record every few years, a process made more difficult because I couldn't remember the exact name of the band, only that it started Van and the cover of the album was a cartoon. It wasn't available when I first searched streaming services in the mid 2010s, so I gave up on it. I looked again a few years ago before google went to shit and FOUND THEM. I've never met another person who had even heard this band. Anyway, listen to The Vandalias record. The first few songs are great.
