This tiny e-ink reader is small enough to attach to the back of your phone.

I love my X4. I take it everywhere. I love to read a chapter when I have time to kill—time I would have previously spent scrolling.

I don’t stick it to my phone. I actually don’t want my phone near me. I have both in my bag and try to reach for the X4 instead of the phone.

I actually wish there was a Kindle in this form factor. Getting epub books and getting them on the X4 is less convenient than using a Kindle.

Have you tried this firmware replacement? Been on the fence about getting one and saw this supposedly makes it work quite a bit better. https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader

I just came here to post about this: Give Your Xteink X4 a Firmware Makeover.

Once updated, the X4 becomes a flexible EPUB reader with multiple ways to load content. The most straightforward approach is copying files directly to a microSD card. However, Crosspoint Reader also enables wireless transfers: the device can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot with a built-in file browser, or connect to an existing network for remote access from another device.

so if I bought a book on my iPhone through the Apple Books would I be able to load it onto this?

I upgraded to the Crosspoint firmware on day one. WAY WAY better than the stock firmware. Makes everything better. And gets updated with new features often. Love it!

@Alan Wasem - You can not use books from Apple Books on it. Apple seems to have the one DRM that has not been broken in the ebooks world.

Kindle books are also DRM'd and it sounds like they would require a bunch of steps to crack them to get them on the device.

The easiest thing is to get your books in EPUB format (no DRM) and you can put them on the X4. There are some sites where you can buy books this way, but selection is limited. (And I do not pirate books, although it seems from the subreddits many X4 users do).

My biggest wish is that there was a Kindle device in this form factor. If it had access to that broad of a store, it would be amazing.

I second the recommendation for Crosspoint - it's so much better than the stock firmware! I always have my X4 in my pocket!

Does anyone have recommendations for the best DRM free bookstores? That's my biggest issue atm. Otherwise I have to take some extra steps with most stores (and some like Kindle are near impossible without lengthy workarounds) to get my books onto the X4

Still holding out hope that someone will come to the table with a viable e-ink phone somewhere between smart and dumb.

For now I'm rolling with the PocketBook Verse and iPhone that I try to keep pretty locked down (from myself).

I also keep hoping this. The one I've come closest to purchasing is the Mudita Kompakt, which allegedly has the ability to sideload Whatsapp/Signal and the like. I really want to meet a person who has one/see it irl though.
