The sushi making scene in Isle of Dogs! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enuua9-1Y5Q
Came here to say this – a miniature masterpiece! Also there's a scene in Le Boucher where they enjoy a simple bowl of cherries, which changed how I think about food.
How did they miss Pig?
This was my first thought too.
Jules taking a massive bite out of a Big Kahuna burger and washing it down with some of Brett's tasty beverage.
Yeah, this is the first one I thought of.
The dinner scene in Tom Jones!
Much of "Chef," obviously.
Yes, the agio e olio was the first thing I thought of
Really surprised that Babette’s Feast was not included.
The prison cooking scene in Goodfellas!
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover has an incredibly memorable food scene at the end!
I love The Big Night but the first 40 minutes of The Taste of Things with Juliette Binoche from 2023 are sublime.
"Put it on a plate, son. You'll enjoy it more." ...when Otto grabs some food in Repo Man.
Where is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?
The Billows Feeding Machine from Modern Times, always and forever. https://youtu.be/UwahG1s4dqI
Scarlett Johansson eating alone in Under the Skin. The extreme close-ups are visually arresting — and absolutely terrifying
The prison cooking scene in “Goodfellas,” where Pauly is telling the guy not to use too many onions, and the cooking scene in Henry Hill’s house, where he is trying get his mule ready to travel, and his brother has to be there to stir the sauce.
You haven’t truly lived until you have someone yelling at you to keep stirring the sauce.
How surprising to see that Babette's Feast is not listed.
The street food scene in Crazy Rich Asians
I find The Strudel scene in Inglorious Basterds fascinating. I don't know if it's just me but for a fraction of a second you can see a "OMG this is so effin' good" reaction from Shoshanna/Emmanuelle... And of course all the other emotions going on are beyond great. But that eye-widening moment from her after trying the Strudel... just fantastic.
I know it's opposite the direction of the article but the Denethor eating scene in the Return of the King feels appropriate.
There's a brief scene in The Contender when Joan Allen and Gary Oldman have lunch in the Senate dining room. He orders before she arrives and he's eating while she's looking at the menu, then he tries to order a steak for her even though she's vegetarian. And the way he eats, all lip-smacking and talking with his mouth full — it's a brilliant depiction of political power-jockeying (he's against her confirmation as VP) all choreographed through this meal.
Chocolat? Like Water for Chocolate?
Documentaries are allowed (Come See Me In The Good Light), which means I can suggest my favorite food movie: Jiro Dreams of Sushi.
If you haven’t seen it, I very much recommend it. It follows a sushi chef who has spent his life perfecting his craft, the small restaurant he runs and its staff.
And the sushi does look delicious.
Joe Pantoliano's Cypher eating a piece of steak in The Matrix is an important plot point and makes the steak look delicious
