My PhD advisor (we’re media psychologists) has her mass media class do this for a week every term (yes to school-based use and calling your mom, but no socials, tv, or web browsing for fun) while they learn about functional vs dysfunctional use and other frameworks for how we measure all the things our devices do. It’s always a winner

In my college media theory class, way back in 1997, we had to go a week without TV. We even had to try and recruit our family to join us, which if I remember correctly I did. It was one of the most impactful excercises that still resonates with me today. What would our country be like if we mandated media literacy for all high schoolers?
