A more useful model would be one based on how humans expanded to colonize Antarctica and the peaks of the Himalayas.
... Oh.
Colonizing space might make for a fun and educational board game but to think that going someplace where there is no air, no water, no food and no friendly indigenous people to see you through the tough times is hubris on a galactic scale.
