I don’t hate it. All the meals I’ve had from restaurants on this list were meals that I kept thinking about for a long time afterwards.
Odd to not see game-changers like SF’s State Bird Provision and DC’s Rose’s Luxury on here. 38 is a strange number, and to me, this is an strange list.
Eater 38 has been their branded thing since the beginning and just the number they chose that was large and yet small enough on a per city basis. It doesn't seem to mean anything other than in their original article it was based on a list of 33 restaurants from Budapest. It also happens to be the 20th anniversary of them making 38 listings.
I agree, the list is strange:
* Why use these filters? 1) "narrowed it, partially, by limiting ourselves only to restaurants that opened in 2005" and 2) "we included beloved restaurants from that period with an outsize influence, even if they have since closed"
* Their write-ups are boring and do not entice me to visit any of the restaurants, even the ones I've been to many times.
**** LA is woefully over-represented in this list.

This is the name that'll be displayed next to comments you make on kottke.org; your email will not be displayed publicly. I'd encourage you to use your real name (or at least your first name and last initial) but you can also pick something that you go by when you participate in communities online. Choose something durable and reasonably unique (not "Me" or "anon"). Please don't change this often. No impersonation.
Note: I'm letting folks change their display names because the membership service that kottke.org uses collects full names and I thought some people might not want their names displayed publicly here. If it gets abused, I might disable this feature.
