George Orwell’s 11 rules for a nice cup of tea. “I maintain that one strong cup of tea is better than twenty weak ones. All true tea lovers not only like their tea strong, but like it a little stronger with each year that passes.”

The water should be actually boiling at the moment of impact, which means that one should keep it on the flame while one pours.

Seventhly, after making the tea, one should stir it, or better, give the pot a good shake

I see disaster looming.

Way too complicated.

Here’s how to properly make tea:

  1. Put the tea bag in the mug.
  2. Add water.
  3. Microwave until boiling.
  4. Throw out the tea bag and the dirty grass water and refill the now nicely warmed mug with freshly french pressed coffee.

Love this! I just read the essay to my English husband and I scanned the comments... your simple steps I knew he'd hate, I couldn't stop laughing on #4... Mr. D declared us all animals. Ted Lasso described it best - hot brown water.

Interesting time encapsulation. Totally dismissive of Chinese tea--probably never had anything good from there while Indian too was easier to obtain. Discouraging of sugar but wanting milk which totally dilutes the flavor but then the flavor probably wasn't good. Huge quantities of water for relatively little tea.

So much of this assumes a gas stove -- very much a product of its time. With induction, at least two of these rules can't be realized. And yet my tea is still pretty good.
