Comments are open for those who want to share their positive or negative experiences using AI/LLMs for coding. Not interested in AI downsides from ppl who don't use them — it's an important part of the conversation but one that is well-represented elsewhere. Thx!
I've been using AI for programming for the last year or so, mainly using Claude to ask questions and have conversations about possible solutions. I used copilot for a while but turned it off while learning a new language and never bothered to turn it back on again.
To me in the present AI is like pair programming with a very fast intern. In the long run I see the potential for it to become a force multiplier but I don't know if LLMs will ever get to the point where they can replace an experienced software engineer without another technological breakthrough.
I keep thinking about the situation in the chess world: The strongest chess playing entity isn't a computer, and it isn't a human; it's a human and a computer working together.
I keep thinking about the chess analogy in relation to coding with AI/LLMs too. I haven't been keeping up in recent years...is it still the case that the best chess players are human/computer teams?
I did some looking last night and it was surprisingly hard to find a clear answer to this question! It seems that the latest generation of chess engines (within the last 4 years) might be strong enough that adding a human doesn't improve its performance, but I wasn't able to find a source that clearly stated that.
Claude, FWIW was quite confident that this is the situation 🤷♂️
