A bunch of people who have never heard of Radiohead listen to Creep for the first time. Some of them were in tears. It *is* a pretty great song.

Now imagine hearing it for the first time not because you sat down to make a video, but because it's fall of '92 and you're driving your car, windows rolled down, the local radio station blasting, your arm on the window sill, fingertips playing with the wind, and this song comes on out of nowhere.

I kept waiting for Beavis and Butthead to be part of it.

I always associate the song with this wonderful 2007 animation by Laith Bahrani https://www.mediastorm.com/channel/archive/low-morale-creep

A great song. I found the reactions pretty underwhelming. But I have a hard time with react content like this anyway. It’s low effort and often just a face next to a thing you actually want to watch. I can appreciate more when it’s a domain expert explaining how/why something is celebrated.

I agree. Nowhere near as great a band (obvs), but the reactions to the band Lawrence (many by musicians themselves) are a genre unto themselves:

Discovering Radiohead, no matter your age… is always special.

Kid A powered me through my honors thesis. Just an absolutely seminal work… by a band that consistently puts out seminal, genre defying opuses.

A lot of Australians singing.

And a lot of people moving and singing in a basement.

Patrice O'Neal's will always be the best reaction video for "Creep":

Just saw the play "Fat Ham" which is an adaptation of Hamlet set at a backyard barbecue with a Black family. They ended up doing some karaoke and Juicy (the Hamlet figure) ends up singing 'Creep.'

I instantly knew that if Hamlet was ever to sing karaoke, this is the song he'd perform.

For me, the most memorable "First Time Listening" track is Rage Against the Machine's Killing In the Name Of. I have a visceral memory of hearing it for the first time. There are lots of reaction vids to it on Youtube.

I've often considered a Reactions Youtube channel for myself and it's just me watching stuff that makes me cry. Video after video without comment.
