The Big Wait

The Big Wait is a lovely short documentary about a couple who live alone in the middle of nowhere in Western Australia, managing an emergency airport and a small row of guest cottages that are rarely occupied. I got this from Colossal, which calls the film “poetic and dryly humorous”; I cannot improve upon that.

I really enjoyed this, especially during this time. A peaceful & reflective watch. Great find!

Feels like they are managing a reverse lighthouse.

In 2017 I was about 200 km from Forrest, as the crow flies (By roads, 12 hours!) I was over-landing with some experienced Aussies for eight days on the Nullarbor Plain, down to the coastline of the Great Australian Bight. It was extraordinary--miles, hours and days of driving and seeing no one else. This video prompted me to find my photos & relive it. Truly remarkable opportunity and memory.

Great watch. Reminds me of another of your posts from a few years back: https://kottke.org/18/01/the-delight-and-challenge-of-true-solitude

First comment on kottke, what a milestone! I've got sooo many questions like: why someone would decide to go there, why stay there, who sends them stuff, are they employed by someone, are there people flying there intentionally, are those 2 flights the only 2 contacts with planes they have had?
