Starting to feel the squeeze of Bluesky it seems.
Jason, I know in the past you've mentioned wrestling with Threads, and I wanted to share an observation I had when giving it a spin when it started: I follow people on Instagram for graphical reasons, and followed people on OG Twitter for word reasons. And at the start of Threads, I discovered that I didn't necessarily want to read what my IG follows were writing. Not because of topics or views they covered or anything...it's just not what drew me to their content in the first place.
Currently, I'm not actively using any of the text-centered social media apps, having stopped using Twitter and deciding to not pick any of the others up. (Certainly helps that I was laid off from my marketing job in late 2022! Silver lining.) I definitely miss the connections and discoveries, but wowsers, my mental health is loads better.
I do hate feeling less informed about things now, but if the weight of all that is preventing me from being present and helpful and participating in the action needed to change things, then, for me, it's worth the trade.
Joke's on me, though -- my new job is in a high school and I'm helping students in two U.S. History classes. ๐
Delete Threads, go all in on bluesky. Meta is run by dorks.

This is the name that'll be displayed next to comments you make on kottke.org; your email will not be displayed publicly. I'd encourage you to use your real name (or at least your first name and last initial) but you can also pick something that you go by when you participate in communities online. Choose something durable and reasonably unique (not "Me" or "anon"). Please don't change this often. No impersonation.
Note: I'm letting folks change their display names because the membership service that kottke.org uses collects full names and I thought some people might not want their names displayed publicly here. If it gets abused, I might disable this feature.
If you feel like this comment goes against the grain of the community guidelines or is otherwise inappropriate, please let me know and I will take a look at it.
