I "Delete and Report Junk" on the iPhone, but I'm pretty sure that means I've now blocked approximately 52% of the available North American telephone number pool. I assume the whenever anyone texts me, it takes a couple of racks in a Wyoming datacenter to figure out if they're actually allowed to.
Unfortunately, that option doesn't really do much other than fill up some kind of naughty list at Apple HQ, https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/08/28/messages-political-spam. The messages can still come through, and for me they definitely did, until I started manually responding STOP. So dumb.
I went to Act Blue to donate but stopped midway through form and tried to find a different method. Didn't matter, since I typed my email in the field they captured it and have already messaged me and spread it to other campaigns.
It's very frustrating that there's not a way to donate and never be contacted again, aside from mailing a $50 bill to the campaign HQ with a fake return address.
What's even more frustrating is that they then share your email with *every* campaign on their platform and when you ask them to stop, they tell you they can't, because the campaigns are the ones emailing you. The number of random campaigns in states far away from mine that I've heard from in recent years is mind boggling.
If it's a campaign, if you text STOP back an actual human will flag it as such. I assume at some point they put you back in the pool though, because I've been texting STOP to all texts that come out of state since 2020.
Actually, as far as I can tell, many of these messages are scammers. Texting STOP just alerts them that you're human and they keep going. They don't say what organization they're affiliated with but urge me to give money to Democrats at their link. I've been getting them for a year at least, from many different 202 numbers. STOP didn't work. I gave up.

This is the name that'll be displayed next to comments you make on kottke.org; your email will not be displayed publicly. I'd encourage you to use your real name (or at least your first name and last initial) but you can also pick something that you go by when you participate in communities online. Choose something durable and reasonably unique (not "Me" or "anon"). Please don't change this often. No impersonation.
Note: I'm letting folks change their display names because the membership service that kottke.org uses collects full names and I thought some people might not want their names displayed publicly here. If it gets abused, I might disable this feature.
If you feel like this comment goes against the grain of the community guidelines or is otherwise inappropriate, please let me know and I will take a look at it.
