America Must Free Itself from the Tyranny of the Penny. “Few things symbolize our national dysfunction more than the inability to stop minting this worthless currency.” It costs 3 cents to make a penny. πŸ™ƒ

Read on the weekend and loved this! (and in fact, I loved every Caity Weaver article. When a new one drops, my wife and I are always "OMG, new Caity Weaver is out!".)

As it mentions, we did this in Canada 10 years ago and it was... totally fine. No one misses the penny at all. Just do it America!

This is a great and important article. I moved to the States about ten years ago and, as a sort of private and petty act of insurrection, I’ve thrown every penny I’ve ever found in my pockets in the trash.

Fun fact: in American history, there has never been a coin worth as little as today's nickel β€” that's the real target. The penny is merely ridiculous.

As above, having lived without the penny in Canada for a decade and a bit now, absolutely nobody misses it.
When I'm in the US and have to use cash, I just leave the pennies behind if it's part of the change.
Maybe that's the one thing Americans could come together on: eschewing the penny when it's proffered. πŸ˜ƒ

On a practical level, I 100% agree. But I can't help but worry what this would mean for our annual family trips to Nantucket, and so many others'. The tradition is to toss a penny over the side of the ferry on one's departure, as the boat rounds Brant Point (Two Pennies Overboard) to ensure a return to the island. No pennies, no return to Nantucket?! [scream emoji]

Luckily, you can procure a lifetime supply of good luck pennies for just a few dollars.
