RIP to journalist, author, and huge Deadhead Steve Silberman. His wish when he died: “Just selfishly or selflessly use my own impermanence to WAKE UP to your own.”

Silberman's husband posted this to Bluesky this morning:

Hi everyone.

Sorry to start your day with bad news. It's my very sad duty to inform you all that @stevesilberman.bsky.social, my wonderful husband and best friend, passed away last night.

I'll have more info later. For now, please take a moment to remember his kindness, humor, wisdom, and love.

What a really interesting guy Steve was. An ear for music, literature and science. He was kind spirited, curious and really a brilliant guy.

He said he lived a “double life” as “interestingly weird,” saying his science writing “pays the rent,” while his Grateful Dead writing “certainly does not pay the rent but is fun and allows me to listen to a lot of music that I loved seeing when I was a kid.”

Thoughts to his friends and family.

Tragic news, came as a complete surprise. He was a great colleague (at Wired) a wonderful friend, and an endless supporter of both me and so many others in this world. Wise, experienced in so many wide-ranging things, and just the best human.

Every time I saw a post of his online I was always impressed. Great writer, short and long.

Will be missed. Great thinker and kind spirit.
