Utah is basically burning books now. “State has ordered books by 13 authors, 12 of them women, to be removed from every public school, classroom and library.” Includes books by Margaret Atwood, Judy Blume, and Rupi Kaur.

As someone living outside the United States, could someone explain to me why your mainstream religious leaders I.e. the “non-fundamentalist” ones, are not speaking out forcefully against the Republican censorship campaign?
Martin Niemöller was the author of the anti-Nazi poem “First they came…” * which adorns the Holocaust Memorial Museum. His poem was specific to Hitler and the Nazis but he also wrote:
“We preferred to keep silent. We are certainly not without guilt/fault, and I ask myself again and again, what would have happened, if in the year 1933 or 1934—there must have been a possibility—14,000 Protestant pastors and all Protestant communities in Germany had defended the truth until their deaths?”

* I don’t know how to link to the actual poem but you should read it for yourself.

My 2¢: because most religions and their leaders have aligned themselves with the Republican Party over the past 40-50 years when abortion became a wedge issue. So they’re already onboard with all of the non-Christian stuff they spout including cutting social services, glorifying wealth, etc. As someone who was raised with good Christian values I barely recognize American Christianity these days.
