A dedicated community of gamers is racing to complete every uncleared level in Super Mario Maker before Nintendo shuts down the Wii U servers on April 8. They’ve cleared thousands of levels and are down to 1 particularly thorny level.

Twitch streamer/Mario speedrunner Grand Poo Bear did a great video explaining just why this final level is so difficult and might not ever be beaten.

The final level only takes 10 seconds to finish, and some streamers (including Grand Poor Bear) are attempting to clear it in epic streams that span 5+ hours. That's roughly 360 attempts per hour, or 1,800 attempts in a five-hour-stream.

It's done! It turns out the last uncleared level, Trimming the Herbs, wasn't legitimate. Its creator secretly used custom software for the Wii U (known as a "TAS", or a "tool-assisted speedrun") to beat the level in order to upload it to Nintendo's servers.

In other words, it was never actually completed by a human โ€” and may never be, though a whole lot of people will keep trying until the servers get shut down. This means every legitimate level for Super Mario Maker has now been completed and the site has been updated to reflect that, yes, Super Mario Maker was beaten.

Radical update. Thank you, Andy!
