I'm not surprised. No one seems surprised - and that is sad. This should be a surprising snub - what Gerwig and Robbie did was astonishing, gorgeous, fun, and hopeful.
And it was also wildly successful.
(Also worth noting: they managed to get the world's most litigious toy company™ to agree to a movie based on their most famous creation (which they, ahem, didn't create) - and, with their permission, get made fun of in the process. Anyone who's ever dealt with Mattel knows what a huge deal this is.)
I could not have said it any better
Gosling: “my job... it's just beach.”
The Academy: “And what a great job you do at beach!”
Turns out The Academy is all about horses.
Love them both and liked the movie.
My problem with this is everyone is making the same joke, but nobody is saying who Gerwig and Robbie out perform, and very likely haven’t seen most of the films nominated.
Both could take Oscars home that evening, as it was nominated for Best Picture (Robbie, producer) and Adapted Screenplay (Gerwig, co-writer). I think the latter is very likely and deserved.
Personally, I’d replace Gosling for Charles Melton.
Yes, while it's a shame Robbie didn't get nominated, to me it says that there just aren't that many good male actors out there and Gosling skated in! (Just kind of kidding, he did great in the role too, and in reality they could have opened up more slots if there were so many good performances.)
Gerwig > Scorsese. It's not his best and it was overly long and indulgent in parts. Re Robbie, that's tougher because that category is absolutely bonkers this year but I'd probably say Robbie over Mulligan. TBF, Robbie is an exceptional actress but I feel like her real super power is producing so hoping to see her onstage when they announce Best Picture.
I still need to see Maestro. For what it's worth I would have taken Robbie (or Roanan) and Gerwig over McDormand and del Toro for Lady Bird and I, Tonya.
I'm an Okie and growing up, was never taught nor even heard about the Osage murders. OR the Tulsa riots. Crickets...
Because of this shameful travesty, I want Scorcese to get an Oscar for just MAKING the damn thing. You could probably say the same thing of Nolan for Oppenheimer. So important what these two films did for American history.
PS We watched "Anatomy of a Fall" last night. Best actress to Huller for sure (?) though haven't seen Pretty Things... and the direction was superb. How JT got that kid to act so brilliantly and capture it all so beautifully is still haunting.
