Apple announced a release date (Feb 2, preorder on Jan 19) and price ($3500 for 256GB) for the Apple Vision Pro. I am extremely curious about this…I’ve heard nothing but good stuff from those who have tried them.

I'm all in on getting one of these. I am so curious how hard these will be to get, considering the supply constraints we've all heard about through the leakers.
Normally I'm a first adopter for all technology. This feels like something I'll want to wait for version 2 or 3 to pick up though. Work out the rough stuff. See better enhancements. And hopefully a more affordable price.
Version 2 slated to come out circa 2027
I'm so curious what a FaceTime call on this will feel like for the other person.
I'll be preordering right away; I'm dumb excited for this thing. I've wanted a cool VR experience since my first time playing with an NES Power Glove.
Quest, PS VR, all have such weird trade-offs. Quest comes with preloaded software you don't want, can't hide, and can't organize out of the way (harkening to the Windows days of yore... or maybe still from certain manufacturers). It's hard for my daughter to get to the games she wants to use, and for me, it's not a productive system. PS VR has a convoluted user experience, a weak UI, and some strange tradeoffs when used in specific physical spaces. Last night, we fired it up to try a new game, which required another 15+ minute setup to reconfigure (and work around it didn't like seeing a bench nearby). It's been years; these issues are easy to solve, but Meta and Sony's design philosophy feels distracted. Neither of these products feels made for people to play or work.
Apple's not perfect (looking at you, AppleTV+, on bad interface AppleTV, on AppleTV), but even if they only improve some of the above in a productive direction, it'll be an awesome first product.
Call me a Luddite, but there is something about this that just feels deeply creepy.
Creeped me out, too. Picturing the family sitting around with their goggles on, like a Stalenhag print. Get off my lawn with those things!
On the plus side, no more sore neck from looking down at a phone on the sofa. On the minus side, just about everything else?! Agree with the creepy. And the use case in the video isn't compelling at all. Why is it better to browse the web or look at photos via goggles instead of your monitor? Though an OS that works by eye movement seems kinda cool. For those that are excited, what about it seems appealing? I'm genuinely curious.
I’m half and half on being excited about this. (Though who knows when I’d be able to afford it.) The part that’s exciting to me is: sitting courtside at an NBA game, being fully immersed in far-away landscapes (I once went to a cham at a Bon monastery in Eastern Tibet — a fully immersive recording would be a prized possession), and I think a high-resolution but still zany take on VR Chat could be a sweet way to spend an hour with distant friends. If the tech is as profound a breakthrough as early testers suggest, these things might really give virtual presence. But I also think it’s a creepy vision of the future, us all strapped into them, families all wearing them in the evening, etc. I don’t think the tech is evil, I guess is what I’m saying—but I think the way capitalism will optimize it onto children’s faces and the faces of exhausted workers and everyone else is evil, and probably inevitable.
"The part that’s exciting to me is: sitting courtside at an NBA game, being fully immersed in far-away landscapes"
I think that's exactly what horrifies me. Why go to an NBA game if you're not going to be at an NBA game? We inhabit a partial attention society, this is just another device to distract us from our present moment.
I think what he was saying is that with the Vision Pro, you could watch an NBA game as if from a courtside seat.
👍
For me, if I can replace a few hours a day of sitting at my desk working (the benefit of which is using a large monitor) with sitting/standing/lounging somewhere other than my desk but still using the equivalent of a large monitor, that's a win. (Me on just a laptop: not super productive or creative.) Also: watching movies/sports & playing games at home on a huge screen. But who knows if any of this is feasible without having used it.
And to be clear, there's no way I'm ordering one — i just do not have $3500 lying around to spend on something like this.
This is exactly what I'd like to see! The issue is passing the "cafe test" (I can't recall offhand where I read that, but basically, 'do you want to be seen in public wearing it?').
I have a pair of the Gen. 1 nreal/xreal/whatever-they're-calling-themselves-now glasses in hopes that it would accomplish this. You're not going to mistake them for normal glasses, but it's not too outlandish to wear them in a cafe or on a plane. In principle, they allow you to put on a pair of glasses and see 3 monitors positioned in front of you. The limited FOV, resolution, and latency/tracking issues have kept me from using them as anything other than a novelty. At their price point, that wasn't great, but also wasn't an overly painful pill to swallow.
My issue with the Apple Vision goggles is that I'm certainly NOT going to want to be wearing them out at my local cafe, and when they're languishing unused in a drawer somewhere I'll be very aware of the $3500.00 I threw away. Maybe it'll still be worth it to get work done in a hotel room somewhere?
Also, this is a perfect commercial for it.
As a general computing tool, I don't care for this. I don't want this on my face for any substantial length of time.
There are use cases for an augmented reality tool that I would use. The primary one that I would like for my business is underground utilities. Assuming you have a solid 3d model of the pipes and conduit underground, it would be awesome to be able to visualize those in real time for directional drillers or excavators.
