Hey, this is a test of the new comments system for kottke.org. The guidelines aren't written yet (I have so many notes, suggestions are welcome) but everything should work (🤞). Kick the tires if you please.
Comments are threaded one level deep — so you can reply to comments but not to replies. I may hide and lock some comments (temporarily) to test out the admin tools. You can use some HTML (links, bold, italics, blockquotes, and lists)...URLs pasted on their own line will be automagically linked. You can change your display name just under the posting form.
Feedback of all sorts is welcome. Thanks for testing this out!
I've already found a bug...timezone error! 🫠
Oh and the most important thing: comments can be read by anyone but you have to be a member to post. I'll write a whole thing about this, but the primary reason is it will hopefully be more manageable to moderate and follow conversations.
🥔-shaped stones are better for skipping.
This is...relevant to my interests. I learned (too late) last month that there's an annual stone skipping contest in Vermont:

I am definitely doing this in 2024!
Thank you for this pro tip!!
I think this is a terrific idea. People love contributing to the web in small ways. Tying it to membership creates good, aligned incentives and makes moderation easier and meaningful. (Fuck around and find out ⇒ lose your membership and forfeit your fees!) I would happily be a frequent (and I hope welcome) commenter on kottke.org.
Kicking the tires on HTML (ooh look a style editor):

Fave dog names? In our neighborhood, we have a dog called Ravioli, and another called Normal. (Normal bites.)
also love this duo: https://www.instagram.com/harry_und_paul/
You have to put the URL on it's own line to auto-link it. Like so:
https://www.instagram.com/harry_und_paul/
I'm going to think about if it makes sense to autolink URLs anywhere in the text...
I know a Bernese mountain dog named Bunsen (the Berner), and his brother Beaker, a lab.
Also, two dog brothers named Iceberg and Romaine.
Your comment reminds me that there really isn't enough dog content on kottke.org. In fact... is there *any* dog comment on kottke.org??!
Let me be the first to suggest the need for an edit or delete button.
Testing out image posting
It doesn't post images, even if they're correctly formatted HTML! Probably a good security feature to keep buttholes off the site
Oh yeah, absolutely no images. At least not at the moment. I barely trust myself to post images!
Good afternoon
I’ve been enjoying the WNBA finals
Well, I’ve been enjoying the playoffs. The Finals have not been fun for Liberty fans, but it’s not over.
Candace Parker and A'ja Wilson are a lot to handle
Oh Candace hasn't even been playing, yikes
Yikes.
We're going Wednesday night. Sad to miss Chelsea G (probably) but excited to see Jonquil Jones in person. First row of the top deck, my favorite vantage point.
Are there any notification options if people reply? Is there an (xx) new comments Ajax toast ?
No, no notifications or anything yet. It's on the to-do list tho.
I think notifications could be cool!
Thanks for the vote of confidence buddy.
Are there roles between MOD and You?
No, just those two.
My favorite recent thing is Ghost Town Pumpkin Festival, a free game for Windows/macOS/Linux from the creator of the brilliant game, A Short Hike. It's a spooky multiplayer world where everyone is a ghost, and you can carve pumpkins, which go on display randomly in the world. It's only open during the month of October every year, and he keeps expanding it and adding new things every year. It's a delight.
I see this comment twice, which may be intentional, but it’s disorienting!
In mobile, “replying” is more prominent than authoring a new comment. Is that intentional?
Thanks for the tip, Andy, I'll check it out.
David, the posts at the top are pinned. They also appear in their proper place because they might be replies or have threads attached to them. I didn’t want to display whole threads at the top (if a pinned comment has 10 replies, etc.). But I also didn’t want people replying to pinned comments without the context of the rest of the thread. It’s not a great solution but none of the other solutions are that good either… I agree that it is confusing — both Andy and Caroline noted that as well.
Thanks Jason.
Thanks for testing this out, everyone. I've fixed a few bugs and such here and there, so hopefully things are working a little bit smoother.
Will there be a Halloween theme for Kottke.org?
How would a season pass for Kottke.org work?
I think I'd need more resources to make either of those things happen. Happy to experience them in Fortnite tho!
A thing I've been wondering about is do playing games like Wordle or Crosswordle or Connections make your brain smarter at all? And also is it better to do it before bed or right when you wake up.
I don't know about Wordle, but I've been doing the Spelling Bee for a couple of years and the NYT crossword for several months and I feel like it's been a really good brain exercise. Zero actual evidence though!
When do you do it?
Aaron that is a very personal question. (In the AM and then throughout the day when I need a little break from my bigger screen.)
IT CAN EITHER HELP YOUR BRAIN WAKE UP OR HELP YOUR BRAIN GO TO SLEEP IS ALL I AM SAYING.

This is the name that'll be displayed next to comments you make on kottke.org; your email will not be displayed publicly. I'd encourage you to use your real name (or at least your first name and last initial) but you can also pick something that you go by when you participate in communities online. Choose something durable and reasonably unique (not "Me" or "anon"). Please don't change this often. No impersonation..
Note: I'm letting folks change their display names because the membership service that kottke.org uses collects full names and I thought some people might not want their names displayed publicly here. If it gets abused, I might disable this feature.
If you feel like this comment goes against the grain of the community guidelines or is otherwise inappropriate, please let me know and I will take a look at it.
