weird - just last night i was driving somewhere and heard the noted suffix. "Where on earth did that come from?"
I asked my passenger... we had no idea. We speculated for a bit then gave up. Now, today, i get to work and read that. oy.

This column originally appeared in the New York Times Magazine on Sunday, 12-Sept-2004: link

The linked IHT version of the column differs from the above in two respects.

1) The column on the NY Times site was written by Kathleen E. Miller. "William Safire is on vacation," it notes. The IHT has Safire as the column's author. This appears to be an error

2) The last line of the column is omitted from the IHT version.
