Gael samples the stick-oriented bounty of the Minnesota State Fair
Gael samples the stick-oriented bounty of the Minnesota State Fair. Including deep-fried candy bars, deep-fried Twinkies, deep-fried macaroni and cheese — sensing a trend here? — pork chops, and a deep-fried reuben sandwich.

As much as I dislike leaving the island, Chip Shop in Park Slope has the first three and more. Deep-fried mac & cheese rocks pretty hard, as does deep-fried Hostess cherry pies. Think your arteries can handle a field trip?

Thanks, Jason! Here's a direct link to my Fair
roundup. We didn't actually try the Reubens but we saw lots of people with them...next year.

The reuben on the stick was Ishtar. A spicy corn dog with a packet of thousand island dressing. Yuck.

Reminds me of my own preparations for the Minnesota State Fair many years ago.

I made a return pilgrimage to the Fair this year with my b'friend, after years of chewing his ear off
about the delights-on-a-stick to be had there. We tried the cheese curds, Scotch Egg (a hard-cooked egg
surrounded by sausage and bread crumbs then deep fried), corn dogs, fried Velveeta in corn dog batter,
chocolate pretzel rods, and the fried Snickers, which wasn't that great, too gooey. The piece de resistance,
however, has to be Sweet Martha's cookies -- for $9, you get a BUCKET of fresh, warm chocolate chip cookies,
then you run over to the Got Milk? booth, and for $1 you get endless refills of milk and sit there dipping
and eating 'til you're ready to explode. Heaven! Or, fodder for a special episode of Dr. Phil...

In my yearly visit to the Fair, I proved once and for all that the cheese curds from the stand near the animal barns are vastly superior to the ones from the food building. Also, I believe the mac and cheese on a stick is no longer with us...at least, that's what the food guy from NPR said.
And to think I grew up in NJ...

And I thought Scotland was the world leader in deadly deep frying...

The Reuben Dawg will have more kraut in it next year.
