If you want to read an incredible novel about a young female alcholic orphan chess champion get a copy of "Queen's Gambit," by Walter Tevis - you will be glad you did. Tevis is the great unsung novelist who wrote, "The Man Who Fell to Earth," "The Hustler," "The Color of Money," and the absolutely BEST dystopia novel "Mockingbird," which you really ought to read also.

Seen it on dvd and during an appearance on BBC Four:

It is an extraordinary film in place, especially in the comparison between the attitude of Kasparov and IBM and the discussion of IBM's motivations for wanting to win the match. A question is left hanging though -- why don't they want a rematch?

Looks fantastic. How can I find a copy that'll work on my American DVD player?

IBM has a long tradition of creating machines with the purpose of conquering human spirit. Himmler can testify to that.
