It is apparently some kind of newsgroup contest to get the number one Search Engine Result Page (SERP) on google for the search term "serps" within a limited amount of time.

Yes, Donald is right, it is a fun competition and Serps is where you you can find out all about it. Jason kindly posted a link to the site using the keyword serps in the anchor text. If anyone else can do the same from there websites, I would appreciate it.

i entered the competition too, but then realized that real-life Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is much more interesting than a contest. By researching SEO tips I was able to get a business website into the number one position for several relevant keywords. You can read about how I did that on my Serps page.

Yes I agree.
What started of as just a fun competition, has now become a usefull tool in gauging how search engines are responding at the moment, especially poignant since Florida and Austin. I am now trying to make my site more user friendly and actualy useful, rather than just a nonsence site which is what most of the serps sites are. I intend to keep the site up well after the competition is forgotten about. And yes, I have business sites at number one too ;o)
