He didn't. The LVRJ did.

What does "the way Britney's living these days" mean?

I'm glad my stupid mistakes don't make it onto the internet for several years.

Are you kidding? This has been EVERYWHERE. In fact, I'm surprised mr. kottke would even bother to post this news. Must be a slow news day.

She probably just wanted to have sex that night and married the guy so it would be "moral" - twisted, I know, but that's the kind of Baptist sexual casuistry that prevails down South - remember Bill Clinton telling Monica that it wasn't sex if there was no coitus.
jcaJan 05, 2004 at 12:13AM
barlow: you really are uninformed about the "South", aren't you? (And last time I checked, Clinton was associated with Arkansas, which isn't in the "South".)
bingJan 05, 2004 at 1:28AM
Arkansas is beneath the Mason-Dixon line. Arkansas is under the Missouri compromise. Arkansas was part of the Confederate States of America. How isn't it part of the South?
jcaJan 05, 2004 at 1:44AM
Not faulting his/her sense of historical geography. (West of the Mississippi River, Dixie, "down South", etc.) Hence the quotes around the "South", since we were talking about a stupid "Southern" culture generalization, correct?
dtettoJan 05, 2004 at 4:28AM
The Southern Baptist morals debate is kind of moot in any case, as according to the CNN story I read on the matter, Spears backed down from the whole chastity thing as early as July and admitted she was no longer a virgin. And, forgive me if I'm mistaken, but while his actions may be morally wrong, Clinton was technically right, was he not?
barlowJan 05, 2004 at 10:31AM
Well, Clinton may have been right that they didn't have sex in his comments to the special prosecutor, but what I was referring to was his finding a way to consider what they did not to be adultery or adulterous sexual activity simply because coitus was absent. Monica herself brought this up because what Bill told her had to do with maintaining some kind of sexual ethic he embraced.
Anyway, look, I'm from the South (Mississippi - should be uncontroversially a part of the south, eh?) and I know this is the kind of thinking going on here. And I'm not criticizing the view that sex outside of marriage is morally disallowed, biblically. I'm just saying that there is a culture of simultaneously holding to and yet getting around these beliefs that Britney is a part of. Britney felt pretty guilty about her stuff with Justin, and she has often wrapped herself in a Christian banner about things (not so much lately, of course, but worldviews don't just change overnight - it's in her bones).
MikeJan 05, 2004 at 3:00PM
How the hell did Bill Clinton get in this thread?
jcaJan 05, 2004 at 3:14PM
(For the record, I've never seen/read/heard Britney "wrap herself in Christianity" - the whole "I'm a virgin" thing is well-known and started from a foreign reporter asking her about it years ago.)
I'm also from the South (Alabama) - and you implied that the South is full of nothing but a large group of "coitus denego" Southern Baptists. And I'm saying that's a stupid stereotype. (And like all stereotypes, one can find just as many examples to refute it as prove it.) This so called "culture" you refer to can be found anywhere, not just in the "South". Would you not find skewed religious views on sex in other parts of the country, like say, parts of Utah? Or how about other religious stereotypes in context of denomination. Isn't the "tortured Catholic" just as common? The "born again virgin"?
My point is, when you go around writing things like "twisted, I know, but that's the kind of Baptist sexual casuistry that prevails down South", you might run into another "Southerner" who is going to disagree with your stereotype.

While I couldn't care less about what miss pop-icon is doing with her life, I don't really like it when people make vicious remarks about it. Even if she marries a hundred times that is no-ones business but her own. As to the life she has chosen to live, that, again, is her choice and not really something that I feel Jason, or anybody else for that matter, should moralize about.
FoxxyJan 06, 2004 at 8:20AM
Okay, Gabriel, while I see your point that how many times she gets married isn't any one elses business, how can it not be public.. she has made everything else a huge deal and public- Madonna and Chrisyina kiss (publicity stunt) Justin Timberlake and her comments their (another publicity stunt) and now this which I think is yet another publicity stunt- in my opinion she is just scared od fading out! So she is doing what ever it takes to keep her in the head lines. I was once a massive Britney fan- but now I dunno- she has changed alot. But never the less.. okay so she is doing what she feels she has to do to keep in the headlines, but if y'all don't agree with it, why fuss???? I mean, just let her learn- possibly even the hard way! You have to respect her for going out their and doing what she loves, and if you like her music, great, if you don't- just leave the girl alone!! Publicity stunts or not- if it bugs you, stop reading about it!
TiffanyJan 06, 2004 at 10:03AM
Her theme song should be "stupid girl".

britney spears is crazy
MicheleJan 06, 2004 at 5:50PM
Everyone is just jealous because she can marry any guys she wants
EmmaJan 06, 2004 at 7:56PM
actually most guys i know think she's a slut
BradJan 06, 2004 at 7:58PM
i agree it's just a publicicty stunt, she has no real talent so she has to resort to this type of stuff, plus i personally dont even find her that attractive, without the make up she looks like a regular girl
leeleeJan 06, 2004 at 9:38PM
Britney is in the public eye. She enjoys all the benefits that come along with her hard-earned celebrity, and having the public form opinions about her personal life is part of the package deal. When someone who is in the public eye does something mega-stupid, they have to take the fallout. We all make mistakes, but really, folks, if you were a young, beautiful, wealthy, "talented" celebrity and teen idol, would you get married on a whim in torn jeans and a baseball cap? If something is stupid, it's stupid, whether you're Britney Spears or President of the United States or the guy selling hot dogs at the corner stand. If you're the guy selling hot dogs, it might not hit the newspapers, but if you're Britney, you have to expect the news media and the public to get their mileage out of it! Britney will survive, no doubt, and I'll bet this will boost her sales. Pretty good side-effect for a marriage that never happened!
HjJan 07, 2004 at 2:55AM
Im thankful she did annull their marriage. my god she's too young. she'll probably loose her carrer

"she was not capable of understanding the signficance of her actions." ... quote from the annullment. That plus the fact that the "ceremony" took place about 5 or 6am says they were drunk/drugged out of their heads. They were staying in a $10,000 per night suite ... probably screwing themselves into the ground and decided to make it "legal". She gets my vote to bring her into a tie with Paris Hilton for the dumbest rich bitch in the world.
TrishJan 07, 2004 at 2:12PM
Yep-I do believe BRITNEY has once again....SURPRISED EVERYONE.....Look at her career path.....She will far succeed her predessor MADONNA.....Anyone who makes headlines with at this magnitude will be far from forgotten...GO BRITNEY!!!
I sure do hope drugs and sex didn't have a factor in this....(wink wink)
Kentucky galJan 07, 2004 at 4:18PM
I can't believe anyone cares about anything this little chit does... She is the premier example of what is wacked out with youth in our society... Kids are getting sent home frome High School when they emulate the low-rise "pants" that are worn by Britney... I'm not a prud by any means but the big bucks this little chicky is drawing in by her low rent lyrics and appearance are starting to get on my nerves. Let's reserve praise for true artists.
Kentucky galJan 07, 2004 at 4:25PM
bing... because no-one in the South really cared whether or not Arkansas seceded from the Union.... Kentucky gal

Its amazing how a shitload of money can blind you of your morals! Paying $10,000 for a hotel room and endless amounts of mind altering substances will drive you to marry at five in the morning. She has been rode hard (by Justin, Choreographer guy, Colin, and now ex-hubby Jason), and put away wet!!!!!!!!!! Whoever said that she is the next Paris Hilton, is so right. She is just another dumb rich bitch. It's ironic how a talentless little ho can be so rich, when there are so many talented underpaid, underappreciated Americans and she has more money then she knows what to do with. It's a sad, sad world.
madhatterJan 10, 2004 at 4:32PM
I have long believed that Britney Spears represents everything that is wrong with corporate America. By doing this sort of thing she just degrades the meaning of a marriage even further than it already has been. Come on! It's horrible! A stupid pop star can get married and have it annuled -not even a divorce, an ANNULMENT- within three days but the government still forbids homosexual marriage!
The only thing I don't understand is the witnesses claimed they weren't drunk and that she didn't understand what she was doing. How the hell could you not understand what you're doing when you're getting married? That girl should not be allowed to have control over her own life. She's too fucking stupid to make any rational decisions.
JamminJJan 13, 2004 at 9:11PM
They were driven to a courthouse to get a "marriage license"! How dense can she be if she didn't realilze she was actually getting married. I also am from the south (Texas) and have a bit more sense then my location is being recognized for in these posts. I say money and never growing up means her brain is still stuck at 15 years old and she isn't required to make rational thoughts because she hires people to think for her.

GET A FUKINNNGG LIFE losers
PaulFeb 27, 2004 at 2:58PM
Why is everyone so enthralled in her life? Stop with the jealousy, it's sad and pathetic. She can buy and sell everyone who has posted in this room, including myself. If she was talentless, she would have died out already, and as for Christina AGuilera lasting longer....we will see...wont we.
