Sorry Jason, but when I saw that I could add a comment here, I couldn't resist. Oh, and I have digital cable, for which I am pretty sure TiVo is not suited.

I too have digital cable, and it suits my TiVo just fine.

I, too, have digital cable, but I'd say TiVo is wonderfully suited for it. Well, except when once in a while it tries to change to, say, channel 551 and ends up on something like channel 51. So instead of Sex and the City you get The Planet's Funniest Animals. But other than that, it's all good.

Having DirecTivo (a Frankenstein box with DirecTV and Tivo integrated into one machine) means I don't have to drape those IR tentacles over my digital cable box. Typing in a new channel into my remote is as instantaneous as it ever was.

TiVo can't currently handle HDTV signals, but it will record a digital source (cable or satellite) just fine.

I'm awfully tempted to upgrade to DirecTiVo 'cause they've got a great deal going now for existing customers. Being able to record two shows at once would let me save twice as much TV that I don't have time to watch.

To all of the posters, Thanks for all of the info. Does anyone else find it odd that we are having a discussion in a comment thread linked off of Kottke.org's remaindered links? How is this happening? Jason, will you chime in? Are comments for the remaindered links a new feature of your site? I'm curious.

I have a feeling it has to do with using MT on a palm pilot thing. He'll probably get back from that conference and be like 'what the...?' when he sees the comment links on the remaindered links.

AnilApr 23, 2003 at 1:09AM

The remaindered links are just another MT weblog, and these are just comments on the posts in that weblog. The format is using the post title for the link text, the body of the entry as the URL, and the extended field for any parentheticals about the post. The comment links are just like the comment links in a standard template.

We have digital cable and TiVo, and it occasionally screws up the channel changing. From time to time, we get the 7 pm showing of Buffy, for example, instead of a re-run of Friends. The benefits of digital recording, however, outweight this minor inconvenience. Clean signal, no scattered VHS tapes, plenty or room, multiple options for season passes... I'd much prefer to use my TiVo Series II over a VCR to record stuff.

Tivo is quite irritating in it's anti video extraction bent. I'd be satisfied even just moving "Basic" quality programs to my notebook for viewing on the road. And with the Archos multi-media jukebox, probable video iPod, etc. demand for legitimate video extraction will only increase.

There is no end to the adventures we can have if we seek them with our eyes wide open.
